Note: remember to review closely the syllabus and schedule (pages).
By Friday 16-Jan, please post (in comment below) top 4 selections of two days responsible for starting class discussion of readings — beginning W 21-Jan. (Note: I suggest “skimming” Norton and/or checking info about the texts online in order to select — hence Friday deadline.)
I will confirm (and negotiate conflicts/preferences) selections/dates via email — so remember to use @ufl account when posting. As I suggested in class, try to request two preferred dates per half (or at least separated by a few weeks) — see example, exclusions, and notes below. (Also, please email me with dates on which you are definitely unavailable, e.g. out of town.)
from syllabus:
Twice throughout the semester (starting W 21-Jan), each student will be responsible for introducing the day’s assigned reading and/or starting group discussion: e.g. directing initial focus; posing question for class to take up. This is not a presentation, though preparation is expected; adequate introduction will be recorded for particular day’s participation.
On the latter, the responsibility for starting discussion carries additional “attendance & participation” credit for the particular day; this will simply be recorded as “adequate” (1pt), “mediocre” (1/2pt), “inadequate” (0pt) introduction, in addition to day’s ATT/Part credit. (remember, half credit for attending, full credit for participating each day; quarter-point deduction for late arrival.) So, 2pts earned/possible for adequately starting discussion on day responsible.
Date Exclusions:
M 2-Mar
W 4-Mar
M 20-Apr
W 22-Apr
Note: there are sufficient literary selections (if we have two “initiators” on relevant days) for students to not introduce discussion of The Cold War chapters, if you’d rather not.
